How tube sizes work
A tube box shows a rim size and a width range, for example 700 x 28-32c or 26 x 1.75-2.125, often with the ETRTO range too (28/32-622). The rim size must match your tire exactly; your tire width only has to fall inside the range. That’s why one tube covers several tire widths.
Valve types
| Valve | Looks like | Where you’ll find it |
|---|---|---|
| Schrader (AV) | Car-tire valve, spring core | Kids’ bikes, cheaper mountain and hybrid bikes |
| Presta (FV / SV) | Thin, with a small locking nut on top | Road, gravel and most modern mountain bikes |
| Dunlop (Woods) | Wider base, takes a Presta pump head | City bikes in Europe and Asia |
Match the valve to the hole in your rim. A Presta tube in a Schrader-drilled rim will rock in the hole and can tear at the valve base; adapters exist but a grommet is the proper fix. Also check the valve length: deep rims need 60 mm or longer Presta valves.
